Crown lengthening is required when your tooth needs a new crown or other restoration, usually due to a recent fracture or a cavity that is below the gingival (gum) and close to the bone.
This procedure involves adjusting the levels of the gingival tissue and bone around the tooth in question to create a new gum-to-tooth relationship. This allows your dentist to access and remove all of the cavity and/or crown the area of a tooth where a cavity or fracture has occurred. The surgery should also render a more stable tooth structure ensuring that the new restoration or crown will be more stable for long term success. This allows you to clean the edge of the restoration or crown when you brush and floss to prevent further cavities and periodontal disease. The procedure takes approximately one hour.
When the procedure is completed, sutures are placed to help secure the new gingiva-to-tooth relationship. You will need to be seen in one or two weeks to remove the sutures and evaluate your healing.
