Explanation of Routine Endodontic Procedures

Advanced Diagnostics

I feel that the most important job of an endodontist is to accurately diagnose problems of dental origin. Oral, facial, head, neck, and ear pain can all be caused by a toothache. On the other hand, not all oral, facial, head, neck and ear pain are caused by a toothache. There are many causes of such pain that are not related to the tooth at all. They only seem like they are eminating from the tooth. Some sources of pain are very serious, and any dental-related cause, if any, needs to be identified and ruled-out. That is the reason many patients are referred by their general dentist to see an endodontic specialist. My job is to identify problems related to the tooth and identify those that are not.

A common type of pain is one that stems from a Cracked Tooth. There are many ways that a tooth can be cracked (see illustrations). Some have a favorable restorative prognosis and some do not. As an endodontist, I have had much experience seeing patients with cracked teeth. But not only have I seen the clinical symptoms, I have been able correlate the symptoms with the true nature of these cracks under high magnification.
