Dr. James Y. S. Ho has been interested in dentistry since he volunteered at UCSF School of Dentistry as a high school student (Lowell High School Class of 1988). His interest continued to grow in college. At Cal, he was a member of the Pre-Dental Club and volunteered at various clinics and laboratories at UCSF. He received his Bachelors degree in Biology from U.C. Berkeley in 1992 and then went to Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he earned his D.M.D (Dentariae Medicinae Doctoris) in 1998.
During dental school, Dr. Ho participated in a joint scientific research project with Genentech, Inc. in South San Francisco which culminated into his Thesis at Harvard. Dr. Ho was also very active with extra-curricular activities. He acted as Co-chairman of EARTH (Environmental Awareness and Recycling To improve Harvard) at Harvard Medical School and implemented a recycling program in the dormitory and school facility. In addition, he acted as Co-chairman of the Asian Health Association and organized a health care reform summit for Asian American involvement in President Clintons healthcare reform initiative.
After graduating from dental school, Dr. Ho served as a hospital dentist in order to gain more training in treating medically compromised patients, to gain more familiarity with head and neck cancer, and to gain more experience in all levels of dentistry. He completed his General Practice Residency in 1999 at the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, California.
Afterwards, Dr. Ho was accepted into the Postgraduate Endodontic Program at UCLA School of Dentistry. During his residency, he received extensive training in performing endodontics using a dental operating microscope and developed his techniques and skills in advanced microsurgical endodontics. In addition, Dr. Ho served as clinical instructor for the dental students and conducted a research project investigating a method for assessing bone healing using subtraction digital radiography.
Since the completion of his training, Dr. Ho has been in private practice limited to endodontics. He has been an active member of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), Northern California Academy of Endodontists (NCAE), American Dental Association (ADA), California Dental Association (CDA), Alameda County Dental Society (ACDS), and Berkeley Dental Society (BDS).
Dr. Ho grew up in San Francisco, but currently lives in the East Bay (where it is much warmer and sunnier) with his wife, baby daughter, and dog. He enjoys yoga, running, lifting weights, computer-aided multimedia, and, most importantly, spending time with family and friends.
